The 26th Winter Universiade in Trentino, Italy was ‘Inspired by You’
The UNESCO World Heritage listed Dolomites provided the perfect setting for the 26th Winter Universiade. Held in the Autonomous Province of Trento (Trentino), Italy in December 2013, the Universiade or ‘World University Games’ as it is often referred, is an international multi-sport event for university athletes. More than 1700 athletes from fifty-one (51) nations participated in the Games across twelve (12) winter sports. Competition venues were based in the city and commune locations of Trento, Baselga di Pinè, Pergine Valsugana and Monte Bondone and the mountain regions of Val di Fassa and Val di Fiemme.
Originally, the Slovenian city of Maribor held the rights to host the event, however in February 2012 due to financial problems, the Government of Slovenia withdrew its partial funding and the International University Sports Federation (FISU) negotiated for the Games to be moved to Trentino.
To expedite the planning process as a result of the shorter delivery period that Trentino now had, FISU engaged the Event Planning Group (EPG) to conduct a series of initial planning workshops. In these workshops EPG personnel provide initial Foundation Planning advice to FISU representatives around the development of venues and event operations with a view to develop an Integrated Operational Planning framework that could be delivered in an expedited timeframe.
