The largest sporting event to be held in Victoria since the 1956 Summer Olympics
With Melbourne being the self-declared sporting capital of the world all eyes turned to it in 2006 to see how it delivered Australia’s largest multi-sport event since the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. 4500 athletes competed in seventeen (17) sports across the City of Melbourne and regional centres Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong and Traralgon.
Our EPG team drew on our recent experience at other major events, including the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics, Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympics and the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games, to develop and submit the concept of operations document to support the logistics program for the event public domain areas for the Office of Commonwealth Games Coordination (OCGC). We also provided project management services and developed the logistics operations to support Delaware North Australia (DNA) to deliver its services in the athletes village and other M2006 venues.
On behalf of the OCGC, the body established by the Victorian Government to coordinate Games activities with Government departments, we developed and submitted the concept of operations document to support the Logistics program for the event public domain areas. This document was used as the programme strategy document to build the foundations to the operations.
Our team became an integral part of athlete village operations and the athlete & event catering program when it was engaged by Delaware North Australia (DNA) to deliver its services in its role as the official athletes village caterer. With over 800,000 meals served by official caterers over the games period DNA contracted EPG to project manage, plan and implement all logistics operations to support DNA activities in the Athletes Village, Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) and Docklands Stadium. DNA received multiple industry awards for the successful delivery of their services and has credited our team's support and professionalism as a significant factor in their success.
“The Event Planning Groups experience in logistics and large scale events was invaluable, and was a driving force behind the successful provision of Delaware North Companies Australia hospitality services at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. Their leadership and management were outstanding, and proved to be a fundamental ingredient in the effective delivery of the logistics component of the project, at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games Village. ” Nicole Wood, Project Manager – Delaware North Companies Australia
